GCD’s 50th Anniversary Celebration
GCD celebrated our 50th anniversary at our 4th annual Early Childhood Champion’s Luncheon on Wednesday, October 18, 2017 at the Koury Convention Center. We had over 600 people in attendance, including approximately 300 staff members.
Governor Roy Cooper delivered the keynote address, and provided inspiring remarks about investing in early childhood education. You can view his speech on our Facebook page! Governor Jim Hunt delivered inspiring introductions for both Governor Cooper and one of our honorees, Brad Wilson. GCD was honored to have two governors in attendance to help us celebrate our anniversary and raise awareness for early childhood education issues.
Following the tradition of previous Early Childhood Champions Luncheons, GCD bestowed honors to those that have dedicated their careers or services to improving early childhood education for children. The 2017 honorees were: PNC Bank for their investment in early childhood education through their Grow Up Great initiatives; Dr. Nancy Brown, for her work with the NC Partnership for Children; Sesame Street for its programming that teaches children, caregivers and providers about how to communicate about difficult subjects; Dr. Valerie McMillian for her work teaching early childhood educators at NC A&T State University; and Brad Wilson, retiring CEO from Blue Cross/Blue Shield for his work on health and education.
Elmo, a well-known Sesame Street character visited with luncheon attendees to help us celebrate. Elmo also appeard on stage during the presentation of the Early Childhood Champions award to Sesame Street! The audience had a great time meeting Elmo and taking pictures with him.
